Officers 2017 - 2018
Natalie Whise Position: President Year: Senior Major: History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science Minor: Spanish Hometown: St. Joseph, MI High school: St. Joseph High School
About: Hi everyone, my name is Natalie, and I will be your president for the 2017-2018 school year. I am super stoked to help lead this wonderful organization that focuses on healthy living, friendship, and exercise. This will be my fourth year on the club and my third as an officer. Sophomore year, I acted as the club’s Webmaster, and last year I was Vice President of Administrations. I have been running for as long as I can remember (my family is one of those that gets up early on holidays to run 5ks). Lately, I have been trying out new events, ranging from the track 3k up to the half marathon; I’ve now completed three of those within the past year, so while I don’t have a specific “event” I do love to use competition as motivation to improve myself. I guess that’s my favorite thing about the club: The ability to try new things, and only put as much pressure on myself as I choose. My three passions are running, traveling and writing, and when I’m not doing any of those, I’m hanging with friends, reading, eating, playing volleyball, or trying to catch some sun. All in all, I’m looking forward to another great year!
Lucas Werner Position: VP of Operations Year: Senior Majors: Biochemistry & Poilitcal Science Pre-Law Hometown: St. Charles, IL High school: St. Charles East High School
About: Welcome everyone, my name is Lucas (@runlsw7 on twitter and @lucaswerner5 on instagram) and I am one of your officers for the next year. I started running in middle school for kicks, but I really started being competitive in high school when I got to race my older brother. When I came to Michigan State, I still had that competitive itch, so I decided to join the club. After promptly getting injured (of course) I shelved my spikes and defected to the true temple, the basketball court. However, the road kept calling me back, and I came out again for good. In my spare time, I coach UAB to national championships, dominate internet strangers at trivia and crosswords, save the world with science, and browse the dankest memes. I am also a disciple of Jack Daniels, I always have a phrase of the week, and I know Sean Virden. Take that as you will. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you this fall, Club or Die!
I’ll leave you with a few quotes: “I just woke up from a nap, it’s dark, but are you silly? I’m still gonna send it.” – Unknown YouTuber “Do you know my friend BOFA?” – Anonymous “You were my brother Anakin. I loved you.” – Obi Wan Kenobi “JOHNNY!!!!” – Literally everyone to Johnny Gregorek when he qualified for Worlds
Jacob Young Position: VP of Administrations Year: Senior Major: Computer Science Minor: Information Technology Hometown: Eden Prairie, MN High School: Eden Prairie High School
About: Favorite thing about the club: The friends you make! All of my very best friends at MSU are from this club. I came to MSU literally knowing no one, but I found my Spartan Family in this club. If you are ever looking for help on schoolwork, want to go out to eat, want to party or just want to hang out, you can find those people in this club! Outside of MSURC: I love all things Minnesota; it is objectively the best state in the USA. I also love sports- especially the Vikings, Timberwolves and the TWINS. But in terms of things at MSU, I honestly don't do a whole lot outside of this club. The MSURC is my life here!!
Michael Rettschlag Position: Treasurer Year: Sophomore Major: Mechanical Engineering Hometown: Rochester Hills, MI High School: Rochester Adams High School
About: Hey everyone! For starters, just in case you are confused, yes I am the guy that everyone calls Discount. I began running my sophomore year of high school and haven't stopped since. For a little stint at the start of my freshman year of college I took a break, but I started to have a desire to return to running, so I found the club and the rest is history. Since then, I have made all of my best friends from the Running Club and I am sure you all will too. My favorite events are the 5k and the 400 m relay, but at the end of the day, I keep coming back for the people.
Stephanie Batterbee Position: Apparel Coordinator Year: Junior Major: Kinesiology Minor: Health Promotion Hometown: DeWitt, MI High school: DeWitt High School
About : In high school, I ran track for two years and I ran cross country my senior year. I joined Running Club my sophomore year and met the majority of my friends here at MSU! I am more of a mid-distance track runner, but I still compete in many of the XC races as well. I have also completed a few half marathons and I plan to do more long races in the future. Outside of running, I enjoy traveling, hanging out with people and partaking in club social events!
Riley VanPelt Position: Travel Coordinator Year: Junior Major: Advertising Minor: Sales Leadership (hopefully) Hometown: New Buffalo, MI High school: New Buffalo High School
About: Hey guys, my name is Riley VanPelt (also known as RVP or Rilez 4 Milez) and I will be your travel coordinator for the 2017-2018 academic year. This will be my second year as the travel coordinator, so I’m the guy that who sends all of the travel emails. Before middle school, I was pretty horrible at every single sport that I tried, due to my gangly and extremely uncoordinated body. In 6th grade, I went out for cross country and have been competitively running ever since. My favorite race is the mile/1500m, and I currently have the indoor club mile record. Some fun facts about myself include that I’m an AOP Tour guide, I like to make documentaries about the club/stupid things I do with friends, I’m an endorsed Brook’s athlete (Ok not really, but they sent me a certificate and a dollar check lol), my record for living in IHOP is 29 hours with Tommy B, I can quote the entire fight scene between Anakin and Obi Wan from Revenge of the Sith, and I know Sean Virden. Follow my fan page @TheRVPWatch. I can’t wait to meet all of you new members on the club this year! Club or die!

Adam Blaida Position: Social Coordinator Year: Senior Major: Computer Science Minor: Information Technology Hometown: Temperance, MI High school: Bedford High School
Eric Hyames Position: Fundraising Coordinator Year: Junior Major: Media and Information Hometown: Portage High School: Portage Northern High School
About: Hey guys! My name is Eric, and I am the Fundraising Coordinator this year! I started running track my sophomore year of high school and some how the grueling nature of the sport didn't destroy me so I'm just kinda rolling with it from here. I'm mainly a sprinter but since joining the club I've realized if I wanted to spend more time with my friends I was gonna have to try long distance. Now I've got some 5ks, 8ks, and even a 3000 meter steeplechase under my belt. The fun facts I share during Syllabus Week vary from I work at a movie theater to I've been skydiving. A few things I truly think are important to know about this club are that 1) When people say they make a ton of friends in running club THEY MEAN IT! And 2) The non competitive side of the club is just as important as the competitive side. I'm not good at long distance running by any stretch but I'm having fun with some cool people as that's enough for me. I like to think we offer a lot to anyone who just enjoys running. Hope to see you out at a practice this year and as always Go Green!
Emily Lovasz Position: Webmaster Year: Junior Major: Journalism Minor: Spanish Hometown: Allen Park, MI High school: Allen Park High School
About: Hey everyone! My name is Emily and I am your Webmaster for the 2017-18 school year. First, welcome to Running Club! Whether you have joined to compete with us or just to run for fun and keep in shape, we are happy to have you. This is my third year in the club and joining was one of the best decisions I made my freshman year. I met all of my closest friends through traveling and going to social events. I ran cross country and track all four years of high school and I knew I wanted to continue. In Running Club, I compete in cross country and I run the 200m and 400m during track season (I know, it's a big switch). Outside of the club, I enjoy traveling, reading, playing disc golf and hanging with some of my closest friends. If you have any questions about the club, don't hesitate to reach out and ask. I hope that this will be a great year!
